If Only But

If only but stars weren’t clean,

you wouldn’t have to dream the dark.

If only but the blaze burned low,

you’d make a wish upon a spark.

And only but the tiny babes,

nestled soft in quiet nooks,

know  the truth of darkness,

and how the moonlight looks.

Then only but night watches close,

and holds your dreams so tight.

If you could sleep forever,

you’d never have to bear the light.

But only if the sunshine rose,

and looked like it was here to stay,

without the light that blinds you,

you’d never know you had a day.

And only as they tumbled by,

past you as you stand alone,

without the days becoming years,

you’d never know how much you’ve grown.

If only then your sadness

washes clean your lonely soul,

because unless your heart got broke,

how would you know when it was whole?

But only then your dreams are stitched

in stars across an endless sky.

If only but you needed rest,

you’d never ever have to die.

If only but the stars weren’t clean,

you wouldn’t have to dream the dark.

If only but the blaze burned low,

you’d make a wish upon a spark.
