The Dead Comic, Reconsidered

Are you an audience, or an oil painting? I said...

After John completed The Dead Comic, we were both certain that we had created a masterpiece. We couldn’t wait to send it out to film festivals, and let the accolades come rolling in. So John sent it out to every single film festival we could think of, starting with the New York Film Festival…and we waited…and we waited…and we discovered that, just like poor Ralph in the movie, the film itself was never going to get mainstream acceptance.

As a matter of fact, it seeemed doomed to languish in obscurity forever.  John sent the film the countless festivals, large and small, and the only place that wanted to show our movie was…the South Dakota Film Festival.

Well, what could we do? We sucked it up, and told ourselves that we were just ahead of our time, that we had created a film too intense to ever achieve mainstream recognition, that SOMEDAY, someone would realize that we had made a brilliant film…and someday, we would be redeemed.

Luckily for us, someday was not too far away….
